RIP Okamoto-san
F
>On May 30, 1972, Okamoto and two accomplices opened fire with automatic weapons and grenades at Lod Airport (now Ben-Gurion International Airport) near Tel Aviv. The operation was a joint effort between the Japanese Red Army and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). While his two comrades died during the assault, Okamoto was wounded, captured, and subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment by an Israeli military court. >Okamoto served 13 years in an Israeli prison before being released in 1985 as part of the Jibril Agreement, a prisoner exchange for captured Israeli soldiers. After living in Libya and Syria, he settled in Lebanon, where he was granted political asylum in 1997 despite extradition requests from Japan. He remained in Beirut under PFLP protection until his death, making a rare public appearance in 2022 to mark the 50th anniversary of the attack.
