if you want a serious answer, there are multiple reasons1. Back then the west thought russia would realize they fucked up eventually and didn't want to escalate, they're allowing us to deep strike them now because they've realized russians are retarded2. Back then the EU was a lot more dependent on russian oil so Ukraine destroying the russian oil refining capacity would have had disastrous consequences for many European countries3. The democrats wanted a higher chance of winning the next election and supporting Ukraine wasn't as popular at the time as it is now
