This is where the inbreeding came from, these families didn't want to just die out or have their original tenets be overruled by tyranny, since they couldn't reliably intermingle with northern occupants or workers that northerners brought with them, they opted to "keep it in the family". Not the brightest idea but history is full of inbreeding even in Europe, aristocracies across the world did it to preserve lineage as well, so it was nothing particularly new or exclusive to southerners. You severely underestimate the tyranny that the north wrought on the south, history books like to gloss over the civil war because it was pure authoritarianism.
