>>539562178It's hard to say what the issue is without their full internal telemetry because of how much shit they're changing about just about everything including maneuvers on a flight by flight basis. It might be as simple as the flip being too severe on these v3 tests as they've both been significantly more aggressive than anything they've attempted with the v2 boosters. The last two flips have looked pretty insane even before you remember how large the object doing a 180 actually is. Then again all booster engines relit just fine for the initial boostback and the outer ring appeared to shut down properly for the continued 13 engine run prior to full shutdown. Maybe the old thermal shielding was contributing more than just heat rejection on the v2 booster. Maybe without the support or maybe a change in harmonics is causing the engines to shake themselves to the point of damage during reentry. I'd kill for a fraction of the full telemetry and camera angles they keep under wraps for every flight.

They need to confirm that there are no issues with the deployment mechanism so why risk unforeseen issues by using mass analogues or a less than full load when you already have excess units and excess manufacturing capacity? It's pretty cheap insurance to just toss a full load to make sure they're not going to have a debris nightmare they didn't actually test for once they go for the full circularization burn.
