And I've perfected storage using clamps Irish style. Pick a good blight resistant variety with decent yield and pest resistent, and one you like and get growing for experience. Even if hard times don't come, you are going to want that experience for the next generations and pass it on. And composting and crop rotation is a must to keep the soil healthy. Grow other vegetables too, and learn to snare and fish. These are the most baseline skills to feed yourself and your family, and no matter what happens, you will have that to fall back on. make it a hobby.
