The fourth crusade reached the Italian coast, and realized they had no money for a ship. They were approached by Venetian merchants who said "we'll give you a free ride if you take down our croatian business rivals". So they did. They sieged the castle, put them out of business, quid pro quo achieved. But the exiled prince of the Byzantines approached them and said "bro I have so much gold, put me back on the throne and you'll be rich". So next they travelled down to Constantinople and laid siege to the city. They made their demands clear. The current king decided to get out of dodge, but brought all the gold with him. So the exiled prince came back and took the throne. He realized "oh fuck I can't pay what I promised". So he ordered all the religous monuments and temples stripped of their gold to hopefully appease the crusaders. This caused mass rioting in the city and much of the city burned down. He was assassinated by his own council. The crusaders learned of this, and stormed the city. They killed everybody, looted everything, and burned down another 1/3 of the city.This event hollowed out the Byzantine so badly, they soon fell to Islam. It was one of the most destructive events from the perspective of European history. Along with the plagues, which also hollowedout like 1/3 of Europe's population allowing Islam to advance.
