It's not so much about the Confederacy during the American Civil War.
It's more about that it's an icon of identity that you wear because it's your heritage, despite the fact people consider it to be a social faux pas. That's what's "based".
The flag has meaning beyond "slave owners" to a vast amount of American southerners. It reflects a geographic location and people's ancestral ties to it.
