Every neighborhood had its own corner stores and bars. People didn't have cars.Overtime, cars/transportation trucks became more common. People headed out further to other places. It got easier for companies to ship stuff in. Chains and bigger stores had more of a selection and more stock than corner stores and eventually put them out of business.There's a decent bit of corner bars where I'm at. I don't particularly like living near one as the customers do get rowdy and they take their behaviors out to the street. I don't drink so I've never been in one and don't know what goes on. If you don't serve food though, you ensure a large portion of people never come in through the doors.

It would be closer to 150 bucks today, billed as if it's some premium life experience, when it used to be a way to burn some time after work. "Going out" is too expensive for most people in their 20s, no way could a group of friends go to the cafe or bar or diner every day as you see in 90s TV shows, it's become a planned budgetary event.
