PS3 was just as powerful as PS4. There was no need for the PS4 other than to compete with Xbox on console sales. PS3 was starting to dominate the market as a Netflix box and having exclusives like God of War 3, Uncharted series, and The Last of Us. The big PS+ hack did some damage to the brand though.

A lot of tiling textures and texture re-use. Also texture file size increases exponentially with resolution, a 1024x1024 texture is 4x the size of a 512x512 texture.

The biggest factor is tiling textures, modern workflows that use substance painter make using tiling textures really difficult because substance requires unique UVs to apply dirt and wear details. Also the old way of applying dirt was to use a higher resolution detail texture that was tiling and overlay it on a low res base texture. The substance way where dirt is part of the base texture requires using really high resolution base textures to make it look good.
>>
>>539697176
Basic rendering without many intermediate steps and it was pre-PBR. Modern games basically render the screen like 20 times and use 5+ textures (i.e gloss/normals/occlusion) for everything for muh realism (that ends up looking like dogshit anyway)

Don't bother with poltards. They don't understand linear vs exponential growth.

Hypotheticals like how someone would feel if they didn't have breakfast is a way to guage a person's intellect. I think a better way would to see if they understand growth rates.

Every dumb fuck can drag and drop shit from an object pool.

I strongly believe that at some point there should be regulation to stop the exponential increase of hardware requirements for videogames. I love videogames, but at some point all the unnecessary detail bloat and hyperrealism doesn't make a game better. I would say that 8th gen graphics are more than enough for realistic looking games. And that's the fun thing, the best games released today are all indies which can run on a potato, I'm talking about games like Porject Zomboid, Rimworld, Kenshi, all those roguelikes... AAA is pure trash despite having 4k textures. This is political because we are spending a ton of resources to make ridiculously powerful hardware to play shitty AAA games.

on modern cards high poly counts are a more efficient way of providing depth and detail to a surface compared to fragment shader tricks they used back then (which also get exponentially more expensive as texture sizes grow).
in 2005 the vertex shaders were the most substantial step of the pipeline, on a modern card it represents under 1% of total frame time. it's why we have dogshit like nanite for lod, because the difference between a good lod system and a shit one is like 2 nanoseconds per frame.

modern rendering is all about accurate lightning, which older games didn't have.

restraint and optimization
>>
>>539700383
dude, simple normal maps for details is still most effective + use raytraced ambient oclusion maps, pre-render these in your favorite 3D software. High polycount is pure lazyness in Zbrush based workflow, skipping few mundane tasks just because of short attention span.
>>
>>539700034
Kenshi isn't the greatest example
>>
>>539700383
That isn't true, high poly count is just lazy modeling, mostly due to ai generated dogshit duping verts, multiple times.
So you get a model that should have say 50 thousand verts, but instead you get 2 million verts and a 200mb shitty grass texture capped off with another 200mb shader texture.
And the kids making it think that it's good because they have absolutely no idea what efficiency is and their idea of "performance optimization" is just being able to load the highest resolution texture on a 10 thousand dollar test machine without stutters.

If you see purple haired children making video games, the games are going to be total garbage. The only exceptions are titles which have been carried down since before they were born. They've simply had a hard time destroying those ones, fanbase is too dedicated so the devs are shoving it down peoples throats, even if it is garbage people buy it and then support it because they paid for it not because it's something amazing and even if it is amazing 99% chance it runs like shit.

>>539700383
>modern rendering is all about accurate lightning, which older games didn't have.
No, modern rendering hasn't changed much at all. What has changed is the amount of bloat within the engines, the use of high resolution piss poor compressed "AI" enhanced textures using up half a gb of memory on grass is another major problem.

Instead of perfecting LODs, shaders, compression, textures, and escaping the nightmare of Unreal engine and its intentionally made bloat that fucks over gaming systems to prompt the user to buy new hardware, you get forced to use Unreal which is hands down one of the worst engines out there.
All because "programmers" are going to school to learn only Unreal, they've no idea whatsoever how to make an engine on their own.

>nightmare of Unreal engine and its intentionally made bloat that fucks over gaming systems to prompt the user to buy new hardware, you get forced to use Unreal which is hands down one of the worst engines out there.
not exactly. yeah lumen and nanite are mistakes. but it's devs fault for opening unreal and not building a lod system with baked lighting. you've never been able to open unreal without building what you intend out anyway, other than that it's pretty good if you know what you're doing. unreal gets hate it doesn't deserve.
