The larger “general store” or supermarket fad for drug stores started maybe 40 years ago, with larger format stores selling the general items a supermarket might also carry, but usually having crappier pharmacy hours. These large drug stores pushed many of the smaller pharmacies out of business. The exception tended to be specialty pharmacies that still compound special medication, and small pharmacies connected to hospitals. Basically though, drug stores selling general merchandise has always been a thing.
