1. true, it's the civilizational cycle. but at least the "old" aristocracy had to fight wars and demonstrate smarts & unity for at least a few generations. once they did and built something cool they slowly degenerated away. this is when they loose respect.

I was just writing my prior post and I independently agree with you that the current chinese system is the best you can do. at least of the current day acceptable and realistic options.
