I think it preaches a lot of weakness in the current situation on the faith that things will one day be made right in the afterlife. I think that type of messaging can make a group easily manipulated and can make the current world a lot worse.

You don't need to read it cover to cover. The Gospel, first four books of the New testament, is enough to get you saved. You will then learn and grow over your life. The Old Testament teaches you a lot about God's character and the severity of the situation humanity found itself in, which Jesus Christ saved us from.
