>this level of fusion makes nuclear bombs look like a joke.
Other way around. A fusion reactor running normally is at its very highest power output with finely tuned parameters. If anything gets out of ideal, it shuts down because it can no longer sustain the reaction conditions. There is no large volume of fuel sitting around either. There's enough energy in the magnetic field to make a mess if the structure breaks, but that's less dangerous than a normal supercritical steam turbine.

>Couldn't you simply melt the nuclear waste in the 100 million degree celcius fusion reactor?
That would scuttle the fusion reaction. Fission waste isn't very good fusion fuel. Anyway, the obvious way to dispose of nuclear waste is to vitrify it and dump it in deepwater subduction zones. Nothing to interfere with it over geologic time scales.

Stars are balls of plasma.
Their light comes from the phenomenon called "electrical arc discharge".
So what actually determines a Stars location on the Hertzsprung Russell diagram (pic related) is something entirely else, the HR diagram is a plot of actual observations, not something deduced from theory.
Our Sun, being a fairly typical star, falls almost at the center of the diagram (at Luminosity = 1 and Absolute magnitude = 5, Spectral Class G, and (photospheric) temperature = 6000K).
A major question is:
>Why do stars tend to group themselves together in certain ways on this diagram?
perhaps the most important factor in determining any given star’s characteristics is the strength of the current density in Amperes per square meter (A/m2) measured at that star’s surface.
If a star’s incoming current density increases, the arc discharges on its surface (photospheric tufts) will get hotter, change color (away from red, toward blue), and get brighter.
The absolute brightness of a star, therefore, depends on two things: the strength of the current density impinging into its surface, and the star’s size (the star’s diameter).
Therefore, we add another scale to the horizontal axis of the HR diagram,
>“Current Density at the Star’s Surface.”
Consider moving from the lower right of the HR diagram toward the left.
In so doing, we are moving in the direction of increasing current density measured at the surface of each star.
The first region on the lower right of the diagram is where the current density has such a low value that the plasma surrounding the (anode) star is not driven into the normal glow mode of operation, let alone arc mode.

Super heated liquid metals. Positive charge turns it into a plasma and then the magnesphere that is produced from the positive charge creates a loop where it is then condensed back down into liquid form before returning to plasma vapor. Whenever these LATEST TECHNICAL MARVELS OMG!!!!!!1!!!! get prophesied or even rolled out, everyone forgets all the advanced tech our militaries and governments already have.
The reason advanced tech is kept hidden from the masses is because it's likely so easy to reverse engineer that anyone with basic technical skills and 10-20k could do it.

What the wright Brothers did wasn't so remarkable technically. What was remarkable was they were the first to figure out how to integrate all the principles involved.

"Computers" were effectively discovered by greeks playing with water streams. In fact the vast majority of actual true "knowledge" came from messing around with water.
They exist now because of...oh right the wall outlet hooked up to the archaic Hertzian wave perturbation mechanism. Which you no doubt also believes "travels" and "has a speed" like other induced electromagnetic phenomena.

I've noticed it too. Theyre scouting specific subjects to suppress and shill.
This is totally schitzo comment, but I recently sensed a significant weakening in their "force". I definitely felt it. Then I started casting about for reasons. Best I've so far come up with is that these floods are fairly catastrophic and they're hiding it. Even if they are suppressing the flood story, it seems like theres more going on here than it seems.
Unless Russia is playing a total rope a dope strategy, their war fighting prowess is truly abysmal. It's sorta shocking, desu. If Russia is legitimately this terrible at war, it's certainly going to reconfigure the calculus of all participants in the BRICs. That would give Russia every motivation to encourage Iran to commit to full scale engagement. Russia needs all the help it can get. Then, in such a scenario , China has the most to gain by completely backing out of any military commitments to Russia/Iran.
It would be SO crazy if Iran goes to the mat and China leaves them hanging. They (China) certainly are moving as far away from petroleum as they can.
Something is definitely up in China. I think it's more than just flooding.
Any MoS guys wanna chime in here? I won't tell on any of you if you give me the 411 on what's going on in China.

I think the temperature is to hold the plasma field to give it certain properties. The magnets can manipulate its shape, and the temperature yeilds certain properties (like conduction) that sets off a sustainable reaction (in theory). I don't know much about it, but it's pretty exciting stuff.

I certainly understand that. And that's my point. Is the difficulty in any way practicable or prohibitively complex? And is the potential yeild worth the investment (and lost opportunity costs with other more practical nuclear arenas)?
I would say with this stuff, the answer to the second question is: yes... theoretically. The first question I don't know the answer, but I guess we're about to find out.
Pardon my skepticism, but I consider the entire space program a massive waste of money and clearly some form of grift. I'm not happy about this CERN business either. What is this shit for? It all seems like space shit to me. Just another grifting boondoggle. I'm very reluctant to invest too much in such things because the return simply isn't there; and whatever benefit there is is enjoyed by too small a group of people. What, really, have we gotten out of our space program? (Assuming it's even fucking real).

I guess, since we're already neck deep in it, let's see what these plasma fields can do. But these people better know they are on notice. If we don't get something tangible out of this, the days of lavish funding for dweeb fever dreams is over.

So they better succeed.

I look at all these grifting faggots today, hogging all these resources that could actually benefit mankind immensely if properly allocated, and I think of the great Persian King Artexerxes.

He brought all his finest engineers and scientists together and demanded that the build a bridge to span the Hellenspont so he could go slaughter some Greeks.

They did it! It was an engineering coup. A bridge across the Dardanelles was the dream of every first rate Persian King. And Artexerxes prepared to make use of it. Lo and behold, a freakish storm stirred on the sea, an historic malestrorm. It laid waste to his beloved bridge.

It came to pass that the king again assembled all his finest engineers and scientists before the people. He then summarily executed the lot of them.

That's right, he chopped off all their heads in front of all the people. Why? Because those half wits exposed the entire Persian army, and thereby all the people, to great peril. Imagine if the Persian army got trapped on that tiny sliver of land between the mountains and the Greeks decimated them because they couldnt retreat. His scientists were too busy playing with toys and not focused on the general welfare of the kingdom. I totally get it. My sympathies are with King Artexerxes.

He then pointed to his back benchers. The stand ins. The JV engineering squad. And he ordered them to build a bridge that would last 1000 years.

You know what? They sure enough did it. It was a bona fide wonder of the world. I believe it lasted nearly a thousand years.

Nuclear fusion is Science Inc's 1000 year bridge to span the Hellenspont.

Study Chechnya. This is just what they do. They wear their opponent down. That shit went on for 15 years and they eventually achieved total victory. America does the shock and awe bullshit and declares victory after lobbing bombs for two weeks and then hands over whatever country they invaded to the worst insurgent group they can find. You misunderstand me trivializing computers. Saying "computers exist" isn't an own the same way saying "quantum (whatever)" "exists. Of course they exist. They and computers are reified. "Made to be real". They were always going to work the same way the water stream timing was when they calculated and set up such streams to exist and solve a problem that was already solved.
What I'm pointing out is the underlying principle that makes them work is unknown. You can tell me all day long about transistors and theories about computing but that doesn't tell me how it actually does that. That just tells me it's predictable because it was made to be.

You should apply to one of those ship captain schools. They have one in Massachusetts. It's called Massachusetts Maritime Academy. I know they accept foreign students. That would be such a cool job. A ship captain on some massive vessel. If you ever get a chance, check out a US Navy carrier. It's a an absolute marvel. I was in the Air Force. But I got to see a carrier. One carrier group when deployed becomes the world's 4th most powerful military. Each are escorted by a whole suite of other massive ships. Including at least two nuclear subs. Destroyers...frigstes...you name it. It's truly mind boggling the complexity and power of a US Navy carrier group.
The world thinks they understand our military power, but they have no clue how vast and devastating it is.
And our guys (the ones in mission critical roles) are sharp and impressive.
We used to land in Rota, Spain on my way back from the middle east and areas east. I really want to see Spain again. But for real this time. Spain is awesome.

There is no stopping China.

The determination of this country is indescribable. Supernatural. There is no force that can stop it from accomplishing anything it wants to do. It can set a goal that seems completely outlandish, drug-induced, hallucinatory, and it can make it happen. That's precisely what it's been doing.

The US can build as many bases as it wants, slap as many sanctions as it wants, recognize whatever bogus genocides it wants. That's what it's been doing all along. Has any of it made a difference? China can adapt to any situation. It took China a mere ten years to go from being barred by the US Congress from participating in the “International" Space Station, to building its own Space Station from zero. Believe me when I tell you that that is a tiny example of China's capabilities.

Genuine question for any anon from any country with nuclear power plants.
Why (or do your) countries not have massive defenses, like anti air etc around their power plants?
Like OP image, say there was a war with china, some relatively small missile or even coordinated drone strikes will essentially turn that power plant into a massive nuclear bomb causing a huge disaster.

If 582 tons of superconductor suddenly becomes non-super conducting it will vaporise in a pretty spectacular way. Local earthquake and large dust and dirt cloud.
Not really dangerous to the rest of the world but a shitload bigger than steam turbine failure.

So the issue with fusion is, of course, it's impossible to contain the reaction. There is no physical law stopping fusion from working, but there's simply no material capable of withstanding that heat. As a result, most fusion reactors attempt to use a magnetic bottle to contain the reaction. The issue being, the bottle always has leaks, because the magnetic field lines have that property. Usually they try to set up a magnetic "bottle". The idea is, when the field lines narrow, then the particle will loop back around faster, and be contained. But a slow moving particle will indeed escape this confinement. Also there's just leaky parts where the field lines come to a point. You have to set up some sort of rapidly-switching field, or some twisting loop configuration that comes back around on itself. People have tried several methods. They have actually got it working, but they have never gotten it energy-positive before. It always requires more energy to run than you can get out of it. Again that's not a physical law limiting them, but a simple question of engineering.

One of the properties of a superconductor is, the current flows indefinitely. Literally 0 resistance in the wire, so if you set a current flowing, it never stops. You can come back 100 years later it will still be flowing.
So I assume, if you have this perpetual-current with no resistance, you can be way more energy efficient with your magnetic field. You don't need to fight resistance in the wire to run the bottle, the bottle just runs. Of course because it's working on the particles inside, it does lose energy, but it's not losing energy through resistance. Because of the lack of resistance you can set up harmonics too, and that could be a powerful way of rapidly switching the magnetic bottle, as I described earlier.

I wonder if they really did get it working? It's seems implausible they would make such a massive investment if they didn't have proof of concept

kikes just dont get it, particles dont exist they are "theories" just like waves, they are like number values inside a simulation. you cant take a wave and put it in your pocket, you also cant take a number or a particle.
the confusion is that a science particle has not the same meaning as a physical dust particle.

I agree, the progress in AI has led me to compress my expected timeline for fusion (and other hard things, like cancer therapy).
We don't see any horizon for what AI is going to be capable of yet, so the tradeoff is real uncertainty regarding a possible existential threat: It's still possible that we all die in the AI apocalypse in another 30 months or so, so that fusion energy and cancer cures would be made irrelevant by the very thing that made them possible.

Modern magnets are not nearly good enough to vaporize themselves in a quench. Where did you get that idea?.

>a shitload bigger than steam turbine failure.
Supercritical steam goes off like a bomb if containment fails. Boiler explosions have historically done stuff like destroy city blocks.
