They succeeded in their mission but in the process the virus was less deadly and had little more symptoms than the common flu. This unfinished chimera virus that Ralph Baric and his lab created was then shipped to Canada and Denmark so that they could study and manipulate the virus in their labs as part of a long standing "Novel Virus" agreement between the 4 countries. It was in the Canadian lab where the virus was stolen by actual Chinese spies who then fled to China and brought the virus to the only BLS-4 lab in China which is located in Wuhan.
