Scanning the books involves removing the binding. R*dditors are throwing a tantrum. Are you upset about this like them?

No one had any interest in the contents of these books before social media told them to be outraged. No one bothered to scan them before because no one wanted to read them. Forever these books have only existed as the unsellable inventory that burdens used book stores, and if it weren't AI companies giving them a new home, they would continue to be unwanted and unread until they ended up in a landfill.
>>
>>539837413
They are shredding them because they want to destroy copies of the actual text while the AI parrots the "revised" version of them, citing it for credibility while no human can actually verify it.

The world that is most efficient for machines disregards human comfort and safety, much less human sentimentality for things like books. Humanity is going to have to make a choice between accepting limitations and staying as we are, or making enormous irreparable sacrifices in pursuit advancement. There is NO possibility of becoming a space faring civilization without completely destroying the Earth and, most likely, modifying ourselves genetically and cybernetically. What I think is we are headed towards the worst of both - irreparably destroying the planet but failing to grasp the brass ring, plunges ourselves back into the Iron Age but with a ruined world lacking in the things we would need to advance back to the same point again (clean air, clean water, trees, arable soil, oil, fuel and oil byproducts, other raw materials). We are climbing a ladder that breaks if we fall off of it. A one-time use escape route.

>erasure of history
How does destroying ONE COPY of each book erase history?

Lets say that among these used books the previous owners are unloading are ones so rare that they are the only copy. What do you imagine those books contain? A secret history or ancient knowledge? Just cause something is old, doesn't mean it's not slop.
>>
>>539843312
this doesn't really enable them to rewrite the famous books like 1984 tho

what it potentially does is give them exclusive knowledge about some stuff in the past AND/or just good (hopefully THE best) writing skills. whether or not this definitely does work out with more books is insubstantial and they'll also not care how rare exactly a book is, they'll just feed it into the machine

No, that makes absolutely zero sense and you are clearly retarded.
They are disassembling books because it is much faster and efficient to scan and digitize them page by page instead of trying to keep them in one piece.
Then when they are done scanning the stack of pages, they destroy them because none of these books aren't particularly rare or valuable. There is zero rational reason to try to reassemble them into book form. Literally no one wanted or cared about these books when they were still in the form of a book, and they are even less valuable now so they get shredded and recycled.

Maybe if your only point of reference is fanfic schlock, but you can tell in an instant when a piece of text was written by AI and it reads like the most contrived trash you've ever laid your eyes on, because it has no soul, it's a cheap imitation of what your shitty program thinks is a human text, but it has no humanity so it can't reproduce anything a human would write, only sterile, preprogrammed, algorhitmic blocks.

I'm the only Christian I know who has bothered reading the 1611 KJB with all of the notes from the translators and apparently the Jews had a bad enough reputation in 1611 to be called "wicked". But that part of the Bible has been taken out and now we have the Scofield Bible telling the Christians to be Zionists... if the media didn't have an incredible amount of power, the Jews wouldn't have gone into it.
But it seems you're interested in a different conversation now, after having downplayed the danger of a modern book burning, so this will be my last reply to you.

Rare books can be scanned with slower non-destructive methods. If they just wanted to buy and destroy controversial rare books they've been able to do that all along. If they just wanted to fabricate books, they could already do that also.
And guess what faggot? If you own the only copy of a book you can tell people whatever the fuck you want is in it anyway and who's going to stop you? It's easier to completely fabricate a book and say it's a scanned tome than it is to scan an existing one and edit it to fit your agenda.

You actually don't understand the concept of different people/companies?

You don't understand that buying a rich company/person's current favorite thing will typically only happen for absolutely insane amounts of money or not at all?

>Keyword being "now", measures which were established after they already ran their train.
No! Most of them didn't get nearly as much as they'd have liked and they see it in their AI models. They're now compensating with books.

> Ever heard of anna's archive? There are tons of internet libraries, torrents, etc
Something like 6.5M out of 130M books? Maybe 5% of books, if even that?

They want to get close to the 130M, duh.

> Maybe if your only point of reference is fanfic schlock, but you can tell in an instant when a piece of text was written by AI
Almost no one can tell now with the better video AI. Why do you think you can tell with text?

a little closer. no one is stopping you from preserving the books you like.
>>
Ironically, if there is a reactionary movement to buy up and maintain these rare books then AI companies would effectively be doing more to preserve these texts by seeking to destroy them than if they did nothing.

Wow an accessible version of a book that you never would have read the original of and nobody's bothered to copy
There is literally no book that is so rare it has no copies, that you would have ever possibly gotten access to in your life.
Everything novel or interesting has already been copied. Everything too rare to copy previously would have never been read by you in person.
What is this mysterious genre of books where, although they have been copied previously, nobody bothered to copy them more so there are few enough copies that you could conceivably buy them all and destroy them, and yet they contain incomprehensibly important shit that could be edited to manipulate the masses?

Lmao Jews are terrorists that deserve genocide in minecraft.

The outrage is performative. If people actually cared they'd be a million times more bothered by the Vatican's archive of ancient historic documents being kept private instead of scanned and available for anyone to study.

If Rothschilds or any other private library lets their books be scanned, it wont be done destructively. Plebs wont be able to read those preserved books any more than they'll be able to read the destroyed ones, but they're more concerned about the last copy of the worlds worst romance novel being destroyed.

While I am actually thinking that their more immediate motivation is that this is simply the cheapest way to get training data to make a more competent AI, I think you're basically right regardless: If they have financial motivations or legal pressure to do so, they'll probably alter the knowledge they captured when their AI responds to requests. They already do censor for a lot of reasons after all, including dictatorships taking issue with history.

I only fear for the human mind. For human creativity and human problem solving. The more thought is automated, the less ability the population has. When AI can tell you what is logical and what is not, when AI can tell you what is art and what is not art, what is right and what is wrong, then you're suddenly banking on the hope that those who own the AI will not manipulate it, or at least that users will spot being manipulated.

Do you feel confident that you can always tell what is true from false? Are you confident that you have never been tricked, never led astray? Are you confident that the next generation will be able to? Or the one after that?

I don't fear AI because of the slop. But I do fear the human mind will become slop in itself. Online complaint is often that people are cattle, but what they should fear is the future p-zombie.

Any book worth a fuck was digitized years ago and can be downloaded as a .pdf in 2 minutes if you're not a helpless retarded zoomer

>indeed often it was only people who saw the societal non-monetary value that preserved books.
My grandmother saved phonebooks. I'm sure there's boomers that have preserved a copy of every TV Guide for posterity. Kids these days don't see the value contained in those pages and will chuck that history into the waste bin instead of taking on the burden of preserving it for their kids.

>there are plenty of physical copies you can buy right now.
I run across shitloads of stuff where I'm holding a physical copy of a book and it's nowhere online you are a fucking retarded nigger faggot.
Doesn't have to be old either. The physical world is a lot larger then this multiple times already purged commercialized shithole we call "web 4.0:"
>>
>>539847450
actually to me it seems like younger generations here have even somewhat MORE of an appreciation for past works. YMMV.

but the physical private storage (housing) is an issue, so they can't actually collect as much themselves

and they also don't even have the same relative wealth so even less decisions are made by them in a financial sense

>they're doing it because they want to be the only source of rare written knowledge
It was done to satisfy copyright law. Their lawyers correctly interpreted the law and the cited this in the ruling in favor of them. Destroying the physical copy when they scanned them ensures that it's fair use, because they're only transferring the material from one format to another. If they kept the books it could be argued that they were making illegal copies that violate copyright.
>>
>>539848080
Copyright law is already satisfied by the fact that the copyright has probably expired on all of these old rare books.

You're a Jew.

>Scanning the books involves removing the binding.
You can scan without destroying them but it's more expensive. Destroying the written record is their goal >>539837638
