Abolishing legal slavery isn't the same as criminalising it, but while most of the Arabophone Islamic World has some degree of slavery (just look at Qatar), Mauritania has it significantly more than any other country in the world. I believe the only country with a percentage of their population living in slavery even close to them in North Korea, which really says a lot about Mauritania. It's also important to note that under French rule the French did everything to combat slavery and implement egalitarianism as France was a Progressive Socialist country for most of its modern colonial history, so they did this almost all by themselves after the French left.
