Internationals probably won't know this, but it all comes down to 3 French-Canadian movies, The Decline of the American Empire, The Age of Darkness and the Barbarian Invasions, by Louis Arcand. Boomers see in it a representation of the modern age but its really just 3 stories about a dysfunctial group of academic friends through their life. The last part is the main character dying and trying to get his 3 ex wifes and all their kids to stay in one hospital room long enough to sing all his praises. Just like any boomer movie, it has the smallest veneer of intellectual critique tacked on an empty celebration of their values. But anyways, in the end, the man gets his kids to take him out of the hospital and hire a nurse to give him a planned overdose while they are all having a party at his beach house. Shit's really fucking depressing, but at least, no one born after 1980 could possibly relate to that movie.
