Fun fact: There were many German-language newspapers in America during the 18th and 19th centuries. But during ww1, anti-German sentiment in the united states skyrocketed. As a result, many of these newspapers were restricted or shut down, and they eventually disappeared. Many aspects of German culture including the German language itself faced restrictions and were viewed with suspicion at that time.
I never understood this sentiment in WW1 and why it was absent in WW2. Woodrow Wilson was the worst president after Biden, who wasn't even really president.

Practicing German culture did not violate anyone else's rights, so there was no legitimate reason to restrict it. America claimed to stand for freedom, yet these policies were fundamentally anti-American because they contradicted the very principles of individual liberty on which the country was founded.
