Thats not to say rock or metal is bad -- I listen to them regularly, but overall the level of musicianship in the rock community is much lower. Thats why a lot of classical and jazz musicians made significant contributions to music theory and developed new chords, scales, and strategies for composition and improvisation. Rock and metal musicians have made much more limited contribution to actual music theory or our understanding or harmony and melody. Rock and metal, for instance, rely almost entirely on tertian harmony, jazz harmony (extended chords), and power chords (which is basically a modified form of tertian harmony, where one of the chordal tones in not played). The greatest contributions of rock were showing how much could be done with just powerchords, and how much you can embrace dissonace while still sounding enjoyable and even accessible.

>>539938918Most "rock stars" suck balls and then a studio musician teaches them how to play.I used to a YouTube series of lessons from a studio guy that taught "insert huge mega names."His lessons were six hour streams of him shit talking you the entire time along the lines of "I do this series for 45 minutes and if you don't you'll always suck" and "now I do this series for 45 minutes, thinking of quitting, you'll always suck".It was extremely motivating and I made incredible progress.Then I stopped because I'm not an aspiring musician and it was too much work, just like he said it would be, and I suck.

>>539938918they are more proficient and technical but they tend to lack creativity. there are many classical players that cannot play their instrument without a sheet infront of them or running through a piece thats already been studied. modern jazz lead players will sound like a carbon copy of other lead players from whatever school they come from.jazz giants are exceptions and classical music has not been revolutionary for at least century. yes, rock and metal are gay but so is a lot of jazz and all of these genres influence eachother. miles loved folk revival music, covered CSN's Guinevere, opened for the Dead, and hung out in the village with the folkies. Jaco quoted hendrix, and helped pioneer fusion (jazz meets rock), metheney does several pop covers and even has an album dedicated to it. jaco, metheney, mays, brecker with joni mitchell, rodney holmes with santana, edmar castenada and antonio sanchez playing with bela fleck, billy cobham and alphonso johnson playing with bob weir, etc.
