Marx didn't want to destroy western civilisation but, the people who came after him did.Marx believed that western civilisation had created the conditions which would inevitably lead to communist revolution across the the West but, it never happened.Marxists who came after Marx (Frankfurt School, Gramsci and Georg Lukács) reasoned that Western civilization and culture, which they called the "bourgeois hegemony", was actually barrier to Marxism and that in order to create the conditions neccesary for a marxist revolution you would first have to undermine Western civilization and culture. Whilst it's not particularly large, the "respectable" wing of Communism in Britain (i.e the only demographic with the potential to drive social reform) is populated largely by individuals from extremely privileged families from the land owning class. This is not something that the average person is unaware of as one only tends to notice these things if you're also from 'good stock'. Oftentimes, such people will have a litany of skeletons in their closet and live a life of dysfunction and substance abuse. It is almost as though communism is an ideology that those with harmful personality disorders flock to as a means to inflict harm upon others. It's fairly twisted.
