That's why it's an estimate, but also, there are some actions and military movements that we know nothing of, so they don't get accounted.Another problem is that you need to have the launchers, and that's what Iran is focused on destroying. You can have the missile stockpile, but be bottlenecked by launchers. The US getting their last 4 launchers out of Erbil in Iraq tells you that they need to relocate what remains to other key areas for interception.Then comes the issue of where to place them. If you spread them too much, you can't cover the strategic areas. If you hoard them on one side, then they are weaker to concentrated attacks. If you defend one country, another one protests, etc...The other issue is that the most coveted ones (THAAD) are the ones that the US has the least of, not all missiles can intercept the higher tech Iranian ballistic missiles. Generally they swarm a side with cheaper lower tech cruise missiles and try to sneak in the high velocity ballistic missiles for key attacks, for which THAAD are used, if they waste THAAD on cruise missiles it's a waste economically speaking. But then again, if you don't stop all cruise missiles you will get damaged regardless.So I would say it's a big unknown, but certainly there's a media direction towards making it seem like everything is under control. Why would they tell the truth in any case?
