The theory that smartphones and “the internet” were one of the main driving factors (if not the number 1 factor) behind things today being “worse” seems to be a common idea. And this thread is probably mostly computer/keyboard users because of the topic. Smartphone users have no arms. They can't do anything easily. They don't make oc, ever, they can't. The barrier of entry to the internet was gate kept and exclusive to people who could afford personal computers in the mid 90s, which was almost exclusively businesses and upper middle class (white) families in the US and even amongst that cohort, those that were nerdish enough to be interested in it. The ultra nerds were into the early DOS stuff a decade or so leading into that but once GUIs rendered command line interaction irrelevant, computing went from niche to accessible. It didn't mean shit for anyone except small businesses until the internet surfaced in the late 90s and it become a trend to chase. Again, you had to be able to afford a $2000 PC back then to access it. The young autist children of the boomers that bought computers on a lark because boomer are the people that built web 1.0.
