>>539970695>How did you like War and Peace?Absolutely brilliant. I read it in Swedish however... would've preferred an English translation. For me it was a tedious read, because I 'tismally had to research every city, battle and character mentioned, like the battle of Austerlitz. Out of the 1200 pages, I found the societal complexities far more interesting than the military aspect of it. It's one of those books that you have to read through quickly, because there's so many chess pieces moving around. Unless you've got perfect memory, interval reading will likely leave you confused, and ultimately devoid of the ultimate experience the book provides.I would however recommend:>The Final Testament of the Holy Bible is a 2011 novel by James Frey that imagines the return of a modern-day Messiah in contemporary New York City. The protagonist, Ben Zion Avrohom (also known as Ben Jones), is portrayed as a controversial figure who rejects traditional religion and government while preaching a message of universal love, sexual freedom, and spiritual awakening.>picrel reading WaP in the sunset with muh lab at my feet

>>539972897>>539973400I definitely didn't go as in-depth as you did, which I'm sure would have helped me enjoy the war parts even more. Tolstoy's telling of Austerlitz was art enough on paper.I liked his attention to detail, as I tend to construct a picture resembling places in my own life unless the text specifies otherwise. If Tolstoy had not described everything as well as he did, then the final product would more closely resemble modern "historical fiction" drivel than the all-time great work it became in its substance.I will try to reread it faster next time, I read it over the course of a month last time and there were certainly a few times that I lost some clarity and had to go back to refresh myself. Final Testament of the Holy Bible has been added to my upcoming books list, thanks for the recommendation!

I just read manuals to my equipment and technical notes these days, and I've started replacing that with my local LLM. It's a shame because I used to be a voracious reader all up to my 30s. Ironically I genuinely fell in love with The Shadow of teh Torturer, which back then was still a trilogy. A lot of people here seem to mention it a lot. Basically I was really into hard sci-fi and fantasy. I used to have a large library, and lost it in a fire. Then I went to seed and started playing video games.
