I would not blame Americans for this, - much of their population (almost all of it, except for the youngest) has grown up in a unique atmosphere where the US was not only the most dominant, prosperous and military capable power, but also the hardly disputed force of good. During the Cold War they had a competitor, but USSR's system on top of being dysfunctional, was also quite brutal and oppressive, thus legitimizing the only alternative as being the "good guys". Growing up with this Americans have been led to believe that they are exceptional people with an exceptional system that is the pinnacle of human genius. Their victory in the Cold War only reinforced this belief and convinced them the "End of history" is here and it is only about time all the world realized liberal democracy is the best system ever conceived by men and subscribed to it. Now, out of nowhere, just when they thought complete domination had been achieved, China comes into play. Unlike the struggling USSR they are showing that their system, while not being democratic at all or fully capitalist, is capable of making rapid advances and in many ways outperform that of the US. Moreover, America itself is no longer what it used to be - even Americans themselves can no longer say it is working perfectly, because social and economic problems within it are impossible to ignore. So, they are faced with a challenge of having to change their identity in favour of a new one, where they no longer base it on the exceptional nature of liberal democracy, which is not an easy task. So, naturally, they see China as the main source of their problems, of the changes being forced on them, a challenger that ruined their plans for the world, and cannot help but get angry at it. As long as China exists and functions as a country, it will always be living proof that America’s system is not the only viable option out there.
