The striking installation certainly isn't easy to miss, with the letters covered entirely in sparkling pink rhinestones.The artwork, titled Do Somethin' has been commissioned by Southend's Focal Point Gallery and marks the first major public artwork by Southend-born artist Elleanna Chapman.Chapman says the piece is designed to challenge the idea that pop culture is simply superficial.She said: "It's a public artwork that is intended to reframe pop culture as something with political potential, rather than just being superficial, as it is often perceived."Inspired by her upbringing in a working-class Essex family, Chapman uses found imagery, rhinestones and pop culture references to celebrate styles and aesthetics that are often dismissed as "low" culture.The artwork embraces glamour, kitsch and hyper-femininity while exploring themes including class, taste, identity and the long-standing stereotype of the "Essex girl".Made from hundreds of thousands of sparkling pink rhinestones, Do Somethin' combines lyrics from Beyoncé's Haunted (2013) and Britney Spears' Do Somethin' (2004), transforming familiar pop music references into a bold public artwork that encourages people to reflect on power, aspiration and personal agency.She added: I’m very excited to have work up in my hometown, and working with Focal Point Gallery feels like a full circle moment, as it was through the gallery’s Saturday club that I attended as a teenager that I first really came into contact with contemporary art. “Now, as an adult and professional artist – a career I didn’t really think was viable for those with working-class backgrounds such as myself – I hope that my commission stands as a positive intervention on the high street that may contribute to the ongoing conversation on how to make art accessible for all.”
