Ukraine is a buffer region between Russia and Europe. It's a huge chunk of farmland with a big river in the middle of it, and historically it was the homeland of well armed well trained Cossacks. The entire point was to say to other armies, "I bet you can't get through here alive if you're headed to Moscow." The Nazis took massive losses on the Eastern Front trying to work their way through that region.
