There's not much of a difference, or, it might even be preferable to just die quickly (or relatively slowly if just critically injured) on a battlefield. Particularly if you believe in the conflict.War is not hell, nor is it heaven. Glory is not for the common soldier, unless they are led by a God among men, which is very rare and usually does not exist.

Modern war is completely, totally, 100% gay. War before the industrial revolution maybe wasn't as glamorous as portrayed, but at least it made sense. In those days it was about the men, their skill with their weapons, their ability to cut, thrust, deflect, wrestle and maneuver. Everything happened at human speed, and with sufficient skill, you could survive. There was room to display bravery, cunning, skill. Now you're just a number. You'll get exploded by something you never see or hear. If you do see it and hear it, it's one of these drones you can't do anything about. Skill barely matters. A child with a gun could kill a grown man as long it's pointed the right direction. If there was a time for glory in war, it ain't today.
