It felt parenthetical, Odysseus' rebellion against the gods -- like an element tacked on simply because it was so prominent and unavoidable in the source material. The script inserted the alternative interpretation that Odysseus spent so long returning home not (only) because Calypso imprisoned him, but because he had this complex moral injury and guilt from what he did to the Trojans. The recurring motif of Athena was incredibly moving, especially when we finally see the sack of Troy in its entirety. I'm not sure how people could watch it and not be moved.
