>How do we decide whether a political belief is left wing or right wing
One way to determine whether a political belief is left-wing or right-wing is by looking at how much it supports or opposes hierarchy. The more right-wing a belief is, the more it tends to support hierarchy; the more left-wing it is, the more it tends to oppose hierarchy. This definition preserves the original meaning of the left-right political spectrum.
The idea that support for government intervention determines whether a belief is left-wing or right-wing is historically inaccurate. According to that definition, monarchists would be considered left-wing, even though, when the political spectrum first emerged, monarchists were the original right-wingers.
