The former effect exists, but is not necessarily that great in magnitude (maybe a 5-20% drop in sales, depending on how obnoxious it is). The latter effect is what's more corrosive over time, as the ideologues' zealotry makes the stories objectively bad, demoralizes the production teams, and causes them to dismiss all criticism as counter-revolutionary propaganda
