He's describing a real psychological phenomenon where when you're demoralized you're inclined to discount contradictorily "whitepilling" data points in order to avoid the pain of getting your hopes up only to have them crushed again, but I think if you have a rudimentary degree of metacognitive ability it's pretty easy to identify that process taking place in your own head and counteract it by being dispassionately critical in your assessment of the situation
