Diagnostics is going to be what won't be replaced in terms of AI and blue collar work. It's also how the best tradesman make decent money.I landed a six figure job because I have electronic and mechanical diagnostic ability. I can look at complex systems, understand them and repair them. Any idiot can follow instructions to install or replace a component or wiring. The real skill is being able to understand what makes things tick, assess unconventional installations and accurately fix them. Which is something a lot of tradesmen can't do. Most of them can repeat learned behaviour and don't actually understand what's making things operate.

Designing something is basically learned behaviour, you can come up with unconventional solutions and apply aptitude, but generally speaking you are using learned characteristics of design philosophy to create something.When you touch a control board that's been jerry rigged for 30 years by your boss, who funnily enough is actually an electrical engineer, that has been bypassed numerous ways and has legacy wiring that doesn't actually do anything anymore. You're now in a position where aptitude is the core component. You cant read a book or schematics to figure out what the problem is, you need to reverse engineer the entire board to understand what wires are doing what. You need to trace everything and figure out if you're looking at power inputs or differential signals, because he designed it without any documentation and updated everything five times since it's initial installation. I just spent a couple of hours rewiring sensors that have a legacy 12v power supply from old sensors that needed them. He didn't terminate the supply because he was being lazy, but it could be assumed that the "new" sensors have a junction in the roof somewhere that feeds into the system, I can't just cut the supply and find out if it isn't needed because it would set off alarms. So you need to assess the whole system before you start fucking around with it.
