>Kolb (...) did his field work in West Greenville and Southernside, two nearby neighborhoods that were predominantly Black and disproportionately low-income. Kolb tried to explain to residents that they lived in a food desert. They responded with a wide range of complaints about local retailers, many of which had little to do with fresh produce—one woman mentioned that it was difficult to get a pizza delivered.>Kolb eventually came to see the food-desert movement as a useful fiction: a way for outsiders like him to center their own “white, middle-class” tastes, and for community leaders to get attention https://archive.is/20260727102910/https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2026/08/03/food-justice-undone-hanna-garth-book-review
>>540112760Why couldn't she just have included this in the OP, instead of first-replying to herself?
>>540112760Probably because they had always lived in a food desert so their habits were adapted to their garbage conditions?
>>540112760>During the 2008 campaign, in front of a largely Black audience in Beaumont, Texas, Barack Obama said, “We can’t keep on feeding our children junk all day long,” adding, “I know some of y’all, you got that cold Popeyes out for breakfast.” Audiences typically cheered him on, but some scholars have been more critical. In “White Burgers, Black Cash,” a 2023 book about race and the fast-food industry, Naa Oyo A. Kwate faulted Obama for making it seem as if there was “something intrinsic” about Black people’s taste for fast food. “Obama’s critique,” Kwate wrote, “did not consider that eating fried chicken for breakfast might in fact suggest a resourceful family making the most out of meager means.” >This is more or less where Garth lands, too. Despite her hostility to free markets, she is instinctively respectful of the choices that her subjects make, which obliges her to be respectful, too, of the shops and restaurants they patronize. At the end of her book, she argues that terms like “food desert” have “created a sense that there is a ‘crisis’ that demands immediate intervention.” What if there isn’t?>>540112788stop crying nigger

Anybody with at least half a brain knew the concept of a "food desert" was a fucking joke the instant they heard it. I'm so happy some yuppies have proven themselves to be retarded.
>>540112743They meant food dessert
>>540112898>“Obama’s critique,” Kwate wrote, “did not consider that eating fried chicken for breakfast might in fact suggest a resourceful family making the most out of meager means.”lmao always with the moralization. As if fried chicken is cheaper than eggs
>>540112743>>540112760The real reason is because blacks act like niggers and steal from the grocery stores until they go out of business. That's the actual reason, and not some other gay excuse.
>>540113203>i can't make money selling fruits and vegetables and organics because no one will buy themthis is the meaning
>>540112898>a resourceful family making the most out of meager meansBuy more fast-food than you can eat, so you have to serve it again cold for breakfast. ...and the nigger thinks this is resourceful.
>>540112743stop spamming your trash on pol you fucking jewish rat
>>540112743I am not going to any of this, but if you don't have supermarket with fresh produce and bakery 10 minutes walking distance from where you live and you are not a villager in hamlet of 60 people, you are in food desert
>>540113701>Niggers shoplift businesses they walk into until they become insolvent and close downThis is a "food desert" 99% of the time. Small towns only have a gas station and a church because there's nothing there to support anything else. Food deserts only have vibrant youfs which can't support anything that shuts down from theft.I remember writing about this very topic for an English course a decade ago and the professor was like>Wow interesting take anon, but you shouldn't assume that the communities are responsible! She was a silver spoon from NYC.
>>540114037I think my great grandfather was Czech, he spoke seven languages and worked on the Orient Express and then later on cruise ships in New York because New York used to be somewhere people actually wanted to go
>>540114037God damn, you are a retard nigger. The entire point is that the niggers in these areas do not care. They don’t want to be able to purchase fresh produce. They want to buy pre-made fried chicken and pizza.
>>540112743>The myth of the food desertI'm 58 miles from food and fuel.
>get a bunch of libshit gibs bucks to solve food desert crisis>open grocery store in niggertown>hoes don't cook>only things eaten are hot cheetos, watermelons (soaked in kool-aid and plastic jug vodka), and precooked rotisserie ribs>the rest of the shit gets stolen just because they just like to steal>wait for it to burn down in semiannual mostly peaceful electon season media-triggered niggagedon event>it's fine, you offshored the obama bux and used Larry Silverstein's insurance company>buy private island to build Moloch temple on>open chicken wings and hot cheetos store in niggertown>stand behind bulletproof glass>only take credit and EBT>only hand chicken wings and hot cheetos out through security drawer>start extending payday loans after a while>become pillar of black community revered in rap songsthey win no matter what because they're spending your money to make their money and niggers are stupid animals that can't delay gratification.
>>540114410It's a big country.
>>540114392The normalization of fast food and the (deliberate) erosion of the ability to cook is a bigger problem than people thinkThe rat race, the lack of cultivation of self-sustaining skills, the fact that properly cooking takes time and people don't want to bother, and the fact that fast food is deliberately designed to taste good for approximately five minutes and induce habit-forming behavior leads to a situation where people don't know how to take care of themselves and don't want to learn how either. It's inducing learned helplessness for fun and profitAnd once that skill set is lost once, it's never passed on
>>540112743>07:12:40>>540112760>07:13:04HAHAHA OMG HOLY SHIT WOWI LIKE HOW YOU PUT INTO TWO POSTS WHAT COULD EASILY FIT INTO ONETHIS IS THE MARK OF A HIGH QUALITY OP
>>540114842>the fact that properly cooking takes timeyour post is largely correct but this is such a bullshit misconception. it literally takes me just as long to drive to the nearest fast food restaurant and buy a meal than it does to make a pasta dish that will last me for 3 days
>>540114037The point is fixing those issues don’t change their eating habits.
>>540114984I was talking more along the lines of things like a proper sunday gravy (which I have never made) or things that require a little more assembly like breading. I for my part am also a pasta enjoyer and pre canned sauces are good enough for me. I usually add shrimp, personally. A simple alfredo sauce is easy, if a pain in the ass to clean depending on how experienced you are with it.Tiny convection ovens are fine for things like ribs too if you know what you're doing, so even things people would point to as restaurant-typed aren't out of reach. But my point is that people aren't cultivating even the basic effort to keep an eye on caramelizing onions for an hour. If you're cooking for yourself, you can get conditioned to dismiss the time it takes to wipe dishes/bring a burner to heat/etc. as a waste because everyone else at your job is walking to the Panda Express next door during lunch break instead.I know what a problem it is and I still need to force myself to cook because my hole in the wall apartment has a mini fridge and so I can't just pack away five different meals after spending a day cooking-there just isn't the space.
>>540114884>autism
>>540115284Yeah. Wonder why Home Economics is no longer in vogue? Because it teaches people that they don't have to eat out or spend all their money on frivolous shit. Can't have that, line must go up. Anyone who said it was about feminism is full of shit (except to the degree that pushing feminism also advances similar interests). Schools have been training workers rather than educating citizens for a while, and that's assuming would-be workers even show up for school OR work.
>>540112743Thinking people won't make bad options is regardless is just dumb. The trouble is policy makers think they can now just remove all the potentially bad options as if they are the mother of a toddler.>>540112894Or maybe they just like junk food and vegetables give them the ick.
