I was pretty efficient and a fast learner, so I graduated to operating the test apparatuses and instrumentation (HPLC, GC, FTIR, etc) pretty quickly, working alongside people with four-year degrees. So it still boiled down to knowing someone, but the rest was applying for a role at the bottom, and working my way up. I never had a silver spoon even though I eventually did my PhD with the children of the elites.
