>Elon Musk just confirmed he wants to get rid of source code

Yes. We are reaching levels of mental retardation never seen before. Basically he proposes to make human engineers totally blind. Because he is not even suggesting to remove a couple of layers of abstraction like the high level langs, medium level, or the Assembly. Not even the ABI or the linker object (.o).
What he proposes apparently is using an LLM to hard-code directly into the binary skipping the compilation stage.

I wonder if he really understands what a binary even is (this only confirms he has never written a "hello wolrd" but only saw others doing it for him) . Because this idiotic idea that many people think about binary being just machines speaking 1s and 0s is only theorical. This doesn't happen like that. A binary of 1s and 0s doesn't even exist. This is just an interpretation but when you extract the content of a "binary" (ELF file) you will get a representation in hexadecimal. But again just a representation since going deeper what determines a binary's content is the logical gates inside the chipsets and the electrical properties of the semiconductor.

So TL;DR:

1. If you don't get a representation of it in high level, regular people will be separated from the internals of the software
2. if you don't get a representation in middle level, most engineers will be excluded.
3. If you don't get a representation of the binary in low level or at least a decompiled extraction then all humans will be totally isolated from the ecosystem. So you will have to blindly trust everything the LLM spits no matter how sloppy or buggy it might look.

Elon Musk's idea here is so retarded that I see a very low chance it's gonna happen anytime soon, but the fact that somebody who runs tech companies even suggests something like this only tells me how low humanity has fallen in this process of estupidification that we have been going through because of generative AI (Or should i say "degenerative AI")
>>
Yup, it's pretty grim at the moment.

This isn't anything new, and this has always what Elon has been hinting at whenever he talks about the future of AI.
Replacing a traditional operating system with AI generation would mean that layer would need to be a hosted walled garden, requiring anyone that wants to use the platform to participate in their identity management, which would effectively kill online anonymity.
The arguments about generation not being consistent or accurate are just problems that someone has to figure out tomorrow. The capability exists right now for a proof of concept. You could make the argument that Elon doesn't know wtf he's talking about but he's just envisioning the same shit any halfass CEO would, which is what can I make if I give AI more power and scale it out.

>>
>>540139040
His ideas about this are not unique, but highly rational. The source code layer is not required when humans stop interacting directly with the code. We essentially collaborate with the AI on a series of specifications that end up as working software. The LLM generates some form of optimized machine code, thus cutting out the middleman. Your bizarre schizobabble about ELF files is completely incomprehensible, and your worries about humans becoming blind to the generated program code are shortsighted and naive. In the future, there will be so much code written by LLMs that the mere volume will make it impossible to audit. It is inevitable. And the code, regardless of language, will end up convoluted and bizarre, as it is organically iterated thousands of times a day. Society will essentially center around a massive amount of dynamically changing ambient software. You are fighting a losing battle.
>>540140790
Not necessarily. There is no reason why platform-independent, optimized virtual machine bytecode couldn't be generated by an LLM. Also, an LLM can automatically convert code from one platform to another in a matter of seconds.

>I see a very low chance it's gonna happen anytime soon
Musk just can't stop humiliating himself.
The whole point of compilers is to make programming easier and more efficient. There is no reason to believe this somehow doesn't apply to LLMs.
You could try it out today. It's not hard to finetune an LLM on binary code. Just ask an LLM to do it and give it a couple of GPUs and see what comes out, probably shit.
>>
>>540142231
I don't trust AI to completely write the code. Also, software has been getting more bloated in recent years. My old computer running Win7 is in a lot of ways faster than even newer computers with top of the line hardware. More lines of code just adds complexity, and at the end of the day we had everything we needed with win7. If they were still updating the software that runs on it, we wouldn't even need win11.

This is true. Of course, you have to have someone write the virtual machine in the first place, but that's trivial.
>Also, an LLM can automatically convert code from one platform to another in a matter of seconds.
Bad for reproducibility.
>>
>>540142231
Why would AI write any code at that point? It only has to generate an output. This can be the UI, the video, etc. The idea of it generating code is to solve the immediate problem where speed/resources are limited. If that's not a factor, then there is no more code aside from the generator itself.

>>
>>540142708
No, you will still be able to deassemble or edit binaries to find exploits and shit in it. Finding holes is much easier than trying to understand whole abstraction. The issue would be that engineers will have extremely hard time to patch any exploits or find performance sinks, since they would neither understand it or had an easy way go review the source. So all will rely on LLMs to do the shit, and LLMs are nondeterministic so can't be trusted to do the work correctly.
But the problem with LLMs is that they are NOT good at coding. It is at best average, which is good enough for a lot of companies. But that is not good enough for performance heavy, secure applications or operating systems.

this was like 4 federal agencies including FBI and DHS. I think i spent over 2 days applying to various shit and only got like 3 applications in of the 30 I tried for entry level GS jobs. The same thing happened with a PD. I was emailed that not enough people applied so they had to re-run the application process. I told them over email that the portal was broken and how I managed to turn in the resume. Never got a response, tried next month and the bug where you couldn't attach more than 1 document(required 3 separate ones to continue process but it limited to 1 so the avg normie couldn't do it) was fixed. I applied to the small town and didn't get hired. Heard through the grapevine they hired some black girl from georgia halfway across the country. She was apparently scared to drive on the highway so they couldn't keep her.

actual computer scientist here... idk what elon said but what op said makes no sense. theres no point in using an intelligence to do what simple math scripts can do, and thats all a compiler is, a very fancy calculator. the one exception being register allocation, but LLVMs already ship with MLGO with profile-guided optimization.

it would be like purposely turning off your seed planting machines on your farm and doing it by hand again. theres no point. intelligence should be driving that machine, not getting rid of it to do the work manually again.

sure, one day computers will be so fast, doing all of these things in different ways wont have perceptibly different durations to a human, cause theyd all finish in less than 1 second anyways. but by then, who cares how were doing things? in other words, if anything, elon should just be refining or developing his own compiler, ideally his own language and compiler combo tuned for error-less verifiability

Because you can't inject garbage directly into the executable. You need the logs of the original repository to fork changes, redo or undo things you don't need anymore, debug, etc.
You need safety at compile time to prevent memory corruption. Otherwise the program will crash at run time.
What if you inject a lot of hallucinated garbage in the raw binary?

You need to bind a lot of daemons, dll, user code, external and standard libraries, etc.

Would you trust your critical code into a LLM controlled remotely from a cloud service? ETC.

What you bring up more representation if we are talking about the material reality. No the human framework. We call it on and off. But it's not like the electron says "oh these assholes closed the door i'm going back". It's just more of the old ohm law. It still crosses but in a less volume

You didn't even read the shit you linked there. There it says what we were talking before. It's an abstraction.

Elon is just a hype man. Its well known at labs like xAI and OpenAI that Elon and Sam Altman don't understand basic machine learning or computer science.

You literally said in the OP
>A binary of 1s and 0s doesn't even exist. This is just an interpretation
In reality they do exist and everything above it (e.g. source code) is just an interpretation.

This is kinda insane, but I still doubt it will be scale with game complexity nicely.
Then again, I only skimmed and barely understood the paper, so I should probably sit down and read it properly before talking out of my ass.

>your worries about humans becoming blind to the generated program code are shortsighted and naive.
So this is how we end up like 40k Tech Priests praying to Machine Spirits.

Sam Altman does not.
Elon Musk is at least a code moneky level programmer.

No it doesn't exist.

Even calling it "close and open" would be closer but still a abstraction. We call it "1-0" only because when you program anything digital you neen boolean values true/false.

But the topic is software, not hardware. Not even firmware or embedded systems

JewLon is talking about writting the .exe/ELF at run rime directly baked from the clanker. He is not talking about touching the logical gates with a LLM (as if that autistic faggot even knew those exist). And that would be a disaster if they attempted it.

So you are just circling around a deflection from the original topic

I agree. But the binary is where the rubber hits the road. It's the final output of either LLM crap or human source code.
Source code is redundant if the LLM can generate adequate binary that passes all the functional and performance tests. However, you might want the overhead of source code for full white-box verification testing and/or ensuring propriatory algorithms aren't being used.

Holy shit this is fucking jeet level coding.

Source coude can't be redundant. It causes no issue in performance.
Only you would think it's a good idea to replace source code for some shitty logs or pseudocode BS only to dick-ride a billionaire faggot
>>
I thought LLMs had a difficult time with any kind of low level programming? Memory management seemed to cause issues.

No issue in performance? Have you ever written code before? Ever tried to design classes, procedures, interfaces etc?
>replace source code for some shitty logs or pseudocode BS
It would be replaced with automated functional, performance and other testing.

Then literally use the fucking LLM AI slop for that bullshit LMAO

Why the entire ecosystem has to create a massive hatch-escape only to cure your lazy ass. They literally are replacing pointers and garbage collection in the OS distributions for borrow-checking an memory safety at compile-time to prevent more memory corruption but your solution is injecting clanker hallucinations into the raw executables to crash shit in production lol
