What field? If it is anything chemistry/pharma related, Europe is still a solid place. For engineering China is the only place that respects deep specialised knowledge anymore. For math/physics, either Europe or China will be solid places for research work but nothing will come close to the USA for money, especially if you work as a finance parasyte.Though keep in mind that European academia has around 10 years left before the jeet plague becomes as bad as America's. Even here where being a PhD is not worth it at all and there are very few programs of renown, we're getting tons of jeets applying to random programs.

They are fine places at the moment but they are going to change a ton in the next decade or two.
