They tried almost a decade ago and the problem was the suburbs didn't want it because travel times even during heavy traffic only shaved 10 minutes at most, so the proposals had lines that ended at the city limits which made no sense. Also the existing commuter line has really bad times, makes two runs between downtown and 4 eastern suburbs in the morning before 7am and in the evening before 6pm and one on the weekends. If it ran till 2am to take advantage of Broadway bar hopping that'd make sense but there's not really a reason to take it for most people.
