The noblewomen had more sheltered lives, but they were often expected to jump into management position when the noblemen went to war or travel for other reasons. The noblewomen would also manage the inward facing matters of the houshold, the outward matters being handled by men. And that was not "cooking and cleaning". That was arranging for education for young members of court, managing finances, arranging food (I would hardly call a catering organizer a timid housewife, there were dozens if not hundreds of mouths to feed. The logistics of that alone are impressive). The noblemen would trust their wives more than people below them, and their wives had the actual authority of being one of the top two people in a given location. The really hardcore sheltering of women began after the "medieval age" was over, and reached its zenith in the Victorian age. At that point, the industrial revolution was creeping in, and the then working class men had shit lives too. Even in medieval age, due to the fact that it lasted 1000 years so it is really like 3 ages lumped together, and the fact that it was spread on the whole of Europe, you had times places where being a peasant was ok, and times and places where it sucked.

Sure, you could work for 20 hours, but heating you house, making clothes took time and it was not counted as work. And in some places, the nobles or church could demand you work for them for example, 8 days a week. In Victorian times, you could be sucked into a giant furnace and noone would really care, or die in a mine. Good thing we have learned from those times and implemented equality of the sexes and labour laws.
