They're actually pointless, without them a few things would be worse but overall things would be largely better. The military would therefore find itself also unable to exist, and what we would have instead is corporations with paramilitary wings, the difference is without politicians these corporations can not "buy the government" and there would be less monopolies. There would be actual warfare between their various paramilitary legions though.

They have delegated most of that power to the Treasury and Third Central Bank of the USA (Federal Reserve.). Long story short, politicians are in a constant fight over who will get to give money out to somewhere. What they do is not trivial but it can be evil.
