If a US fighter jet or whatever hit Chinese forces with a tactical nuke the obvious response would be to launch ballistic missiles with nuclear warheads on every US base in the region/near China. Then leave it to us if we want to turn it into a full ICBM exchange. There's no way they could allow a nuclear attack to go unanswered or allow US forces to stay around if we're launching nukes. That's just obvious.
