I was looking around my apartment yesterday with its gray vinyl flooring, gray hand-me-down furniture (gray couch, chair, nightstands, etc.) and it just sort of dawned on me how deprived I've been of COLOR. I wondered what exactly caused this depressing "millennial gray" trend that seeped into every building interior over the last 10+ years...

Even with all my green plants w/ multi-colored pots & colorful accents that I've personally added to combat the monotone grayness, I'm nevertheless left with a desire to add more color—like I'm trying to scrub off a remaining film of gray, muting sludge still stuck to me.

Was this just a mere fashion trend or was it something deeper?
Even my own mother—who used to tell me all throughout my childhood how much she HATED the colors gray & teal—ended up adopting the millennial gray shit. She's only just now slowly replacing things with color again.

So what the fuck caused an entire generation of society to strip everything of color? Was this just a side effect of/natural course from minimalism, or was this a REACTION to something that perhaps was subconscious?
Or am I reading too much into it? What do you guys think?

It means usury is the root of all our problems and must be forever eliminated by any means necessary.
>>
It just looks nice. It's minimalist style, but you own shit. Go roll around in a ball pit something and get it out of your system.

What I mean is:
Who were the people making houses fake and gray?
House flippers and institutional builders, aiming to offload their bags as quickly as possible.
>House flipper buys grandma's house, no real updates since 1968
>Tears out the carpet in the bathroom, changes the tub too
>Makes the replacement gray because it's 'neutral', and thus easy to offload
>Same for every other room
>Fuck it, even paint the brick fireplace gray
>House doesn't look good, but it passes for 'modern' after also swapping the timeless kitchen chandelier for an Ikea transforming hanging lamp
>New retarded buyers bite because they don't know better
>Flipper pockets the profit and does it again.
>>
>>540307768
Millennial grey as a fad was caused by realtor online advertising and wide spread renting. The best way to make homes look clean, interchangeable and anonymous was to use that gray vinyl and surface color scheme. Stripping homes of individuality and ornament so they can be compared strictly on the metrics, square footage and location.
>>
>>540307768
it's because millennials rented and apartments that came fully furnished tend to have bland shit and they buy other shit to match it

Why did boomers think this was good?

fucking millenial niggers i cant even

>carpet in the bathroom
objectively shitty design choice
be glad they tore it out out
>>
As a painter I think it is a complete misunderstanding of grey. Its extremely complex, difficult and nuanced and most beautiful things in real life are composed of complex greys
>>
>>540307768
>I wondered what exactly caused this depressing "millennial gray" trend that seeped into every building interior over the last 10+ years..
Boomers trying to flip homes. Gray is a neutral color that no one hated at the time.
>>
log cabin aesthetic remains undefeated for 300 years
>>
>>540307768
Millennials are cowards. That explains most of their bullshit.
>>
>>540308026
>lifelessly sterile palette of gray goo looks nice
You sound like you're either a jew or Christopher Nolan's Director of Photography
>>
>>540307768
I never liked it. That's why every room in our house is a color like blue or yellow.

You're asking a bunch of NEETs about interior decorating.
You've come to the wrong neighborhood.
>>
>>540308072
>>540308077
I get it from a financial angle, like flippers, but it seems like the public also bought into it after the fact. Like, instead of re-painting walls or making colorful changes, the public just added MORE gray shit to it. How the fuck was there such a demand for gray FURNITURE??

You can even look at all these McMansions & shit too that were built by buyers; even they planned their interiors with only whites, grays, and silvers in mind. It's just baffling to me.
>>
>>540307768
>gray cars
holy kek
I see these everywhere now
>>
>>540308516
Correct.
I was aiming to be as fair to the globohomo flipper as possible, showing that in a few cases it was an improvement.
>>
>>540307768
How the fuck did this TikTok bullshit make it into a fucking article. Millennials aren't a monolith making random walls grey.
>>
>>540307768
Antiques are often impressive because the dyes are obviously ultra high quality beyond anything produced in your lifetime.
Then there are the supply chain logistics after production... Color is so expensive the capitalist cannot afford to run it on his machines.
Poorlennials didn't have cheap antiques, because of boomer-flation again.
>>
>>540307768
It's the NPC color palette. That said I don't know to many millennials who do this.
>>
>>540307768
go look for nice styles in expensive areas obsesiveluly until you realize what you like. start formulating a list of design ideas you like and then make that your house.

That and wallpaper. That shit's a deal breaker for me. I've seen it on the ceiling too.

wallpaper on the ceiling?
ceiling paper?

They seem to be living in the dead wasteland of Moon or the ashes of a volcano. It's terrible. It's an expression of the general nihilism of that generation. Bloodless, lifeless, necrophilic.
As an early GenX who learned to hate the dark brown and the stuffed rooms of the boomer gen I developed a preference for light natural colors and open space.
But that grey in grey is soul-destroying.
>>
>>540308620
>Boomers trying to flip homes
Sure, but it permeated other cultural mediums too, like the movie industry specifically. During the 2010s the "dark & gritty le realism" aesthetic dominated movies. So many movies were muting their colors & every DP was trying his hardest to make every shot look as boringly gray & lifeless as possible. Cinematography was tainted with it.
>>
>>540308336
Unironically far nicer than millennial grey
>>
Lack of color in interior and with cars and buildings is in my theory due to women having more of a say these days.
>>
>>540308336
That's even one of the less terrible examples for boomer furniture.
Imagine couch, chairs and carpet in dark brown.
>>
>>540308336
The only "bad" thing is the wall to wall carpeting. Dirty. The drape covered walls are not good, but not quite bad. The rest seems kino

>They seem to be living in the dead wasteland of Moon or the ashes of a volcano. It's terrible. It's an expression of the general nihilism of that generation. Bloodless, lifeless, necrophilic.
It does seem like an extension of a nihilistic outlook, doesn't it? Well said.
>>540309534
What's wrong with wallpaper though? I always liked it. Isn't it making a comeback?
>>
>>540308744
> light natural colors
Yes, that's life-affirming, uplifting.
>>
>>540308744
That mounted saw is some Final Destination shit
>>
Its a couple of things

One is renting.
Lots of milennials rent and landlords buy only the cheapest blandest shit for pre furnished apartments and use bland colours for walls, etc

Second for those who do own is the need to be able to sell quickly and cheaply
Life is unpredictable these days and things can go wrong very quickly
Milennials often found themselves in dire financial circumstances and so they decorated their homes on the assumption they'd need to sell them quickly and move out
That means you go for the "blank canvas look" that realtors love so much
Their hearts yearned to decorate but their brain told them it would just cost them more money and be more painful in the long run

an awfully reddit take.

In Portland, everyone wears requisite black puffy jacket and houses and God awful ("high density, low sound insulation, NO CENTRAL AC) apartment and condos are still being built : charcoal Grey/ black
Hideous commie "brutalism"
They take pride in accepting ugly conformity

Used to be a nice "weird", creative town though...
So sad
>>
>>540310593
Your explanation is comprehensible and this may indeed have been the consideration of some property owners but it fails to explain why so many rentoids, the vast majority, accepted this style.
>>
>>540310240
>>540310426
Ok, now let me show you the bathroom which they also put in shag carpet. Boomers are brain damaged from years of breathing in mold.

Looks like a jew pedos pad. I immediately expect the Camara to turn to the right and see two naked kids chained up into a 1940s style giant bird cage.

Post modern puke.

>>540310486
Wallpaper is fine. It has to be a nice design and it really only belongs in smaller rooms like bathrooms.

>>
>>540308744
True. This one is decent, one you lean hard into it though and you start slapping taxidermy animals and bubbah shit it loses its charm. This one is doing it a little. Like get rid of that stupid giant saw. That minors wheelbarrow coffee table needs to be thrown down the abandon mines too.

don't call it millennial grey, call it lowest-bid grey or staging photo grey or resale value grey
nobody likes it, but it's the universally least strongly disliked and most tolerated option

People who grew up in fart filled indoor smoking wood paneled brown carpet hell wanted to live in the opposite setting, a whitewashed featureless box with laminate that looks like hardwood and always looks somewhat clean.

So yenta bitches. Right, a jew pad. Plus he's looking to pick up kids at the local synagogue.

>Wood floor
>Wood Walls
>Wood ceiling
>Wood cabinets
>Wood and wood colored furniture
>Shiny polyurethane on all of the wood.
>Tacky random rustic shit like saw blades and barrels.
>Dead animals.

Absolutely disgusting. I'd probably even take the grey shit over this.
>>
>>540311893
This. People don't really like it but it's not offensive. It's why everything is all grey and white. To the point where it's so widespread that we are having this thread now.
>>
>>540307768
Posts like this are just jeets and kikes seeing what kind of bullshit they can get idiots here to reply to seriously. It's a game to them and everyone who participated itt as though it were an actual discussion deserves to be tricked and ruled.

>>
>>540308744
Living room complerely open to the kitchen is the worst modern trend. How can a woman "belong in the kitchen" if you only have one room?
>>
Scandinavian mid-century is my favorite type of interior design. Lots of teak and that sort. Boomers hated it as it was the design choice of their parents generation and there is a tendency to revolt against ones parents and re-invent oneself in that regard. Your parents are not cool etc.
>>
>>540307768
gray theme looks like shit but it makes it easier to have your own place look better. like they figured out the polar opposite of looksmaxxing for your home, now it's way easier to compete
>>
>>540312025
Real hardwood floors are top tier. Sure you can not like the rest but thats just crazy talk.
>>
>>540311752
Do you not see the PLASTIC polyurethane coating on every surface? And I bet it's that badly done rough texture too. Anyone who knows what I'm talking about knows what I'm talking about.
>>
>>540307768
Its just reaction to 1990s/2000s aesthetic that was filled with poisonously bright colours and fucking logos everywhere.

Sorta like classicism/rococo. But combine that with modern day thats filled to brim with attention grabbing advertisement. Boring, lifeless Aesthetic thus becomes a cognitive refuge from a world filled with aggressive ugliness.
>>
>>540312204
True, it's a symptom of the death of the dining room and the living room and the electric jew became the new voice of the family "dinner table". Don't ask your kid about school and the abusive jew shit that goes on there, no grab your plate and watch some yid programing only on ABC and FOX!
>>
>>540312185
No, white skin and blue eyes. Also rural.
I despise cringe and fake "country" people. They listen to country music. They drive a very shiny and pristine pickup truck. Good chance the man wears a cowboy hat even when it's not a halloween party unironically. The wife gets horses. The daughter becomes a crazy horse girl. They use expensive machinery to do the smallest tasks because they have an allergy to physical labor, the one exception is mucking the stalls for their horses because it makes them feel like they are farmers. I could go on and on.
If you find the decor appealing you are cringe like they are.

>>540312204
I've grown very tired of the open floorplan shit. There are no exclusive ROOMS anymore!
>>
>>540312607
I completely agree with you & I know people identical to that. It's literally an interior LARP. There are cozy, tasteful log cabins & then there are faux cabins like that. It just reeks of phoniness; I can't explain it. Like buying a pre-tattered ballcap while wearing an $800 watch.
>>
>>540311245
What choice do they have?
>>
>>540311404
>Looks like a jew pedos pad.
100%. The boys from A Clockwork Orange should rock up and brain him with his penis statue.
>>
>>540314225
Change the interior to their liking once they moved in?
This is what I did several times in my life of 50+ years.
>>
>>540314473
where is the penis statue?
why are you imagining penises anon
>>
It’s just the final phase of aesthetic rejection of Western roots which favors deep and dark blues, greens, teals, burgundies, and maroons.
>>
>>540310359

Most of that was because their parents smoked inside and everything browned over time; so the aesthetic mimiced their childhood years'. Gray was because the 80's and 90's color schemes became less profitable, also coinciding with the greying, ageing market of the boomers.
>>
>>540315658
I think the minimalist shit explanation is even more simple than most people are making it to be.
It's because of movies and tv shows from the past. The future was always minimalist, sleek, and grey. Now we live in the "future", it's pre-ordained from popular media that it's all supposed to be minimalist, sleek, and grey. This decor was invented in the past. This means we don't even have our own modern decor.
