Especially with inelastic products like food, you basically crash the prices down to transportation costs. If you produce just about enough food to feed everyone, and you double the production, you are pretty much doomed to waste a half of it in one way or another. They basically salvaged the market by teaching everybody to eat large amounts of meat.
