Fun nurse facts.Most ward nurses will check and dispense medication, change your sheets, wipe you, feed you, give a bed bath, take your obs. If they're lucky you're a self caring patient and they only have 4 patients per shift, each. This takes 6 hours or so. They might a basic nursing intervention to help your vitals - bp lowish? Drink this, stand up a few times. I'll check in an hour. It takes so long because patients are needy fucks and there's a lot of redundant paperwork. And that's on a very heavy ward where almost everyone is a full care patient.Nursing is becoming increasingly specialised, with better trained nurses doing the stuff that doesn't need doctors, ie, prescriptions/charting meds. Though you can do a bit of that yourself with the right training. Everything from 'soft' but difficult stuff like palliative care nurses who try to make people more comfortable in their final days to the vascular team, who play plant the picc line on the hambeast, to the SURPRISE MOTHERFUCKER ITS RESUS CREW TIME because you nearly died and doctors don't do actual work or, purely as an example, the retarded mental health nurses don't know how to stop you choking on scrambled eggs. So what I want to know, and the point of this screel: Are these walk out nurses the specialised ones who actually have to know beyond the basics, or are they the bed wipers? There's no moral authority in nursing but there's levels of intelligence, critical thought and skill requirements. Anyone who can avoid praising hitler in public and learn some basic facts can be a ward nurse.
