Here's the early Christian take, it's interesting. Justin Martyr claims that the various Pagan "gods" were actually demons, or people who had become demon possessed, by the Angels who participated in a rebellion against God. He directly references Enoch a few times too. Anyway, these demons, having knowledge of parts of God's will as they did his bidding, and knowing what the Biblical Prophets said, but not truly having the gift of understanding (being fallen and "soulless") attempted to install themselves as rulers of tribes, doing their best to conform to their flawed understanding of the Pentateuch, at first, then later as the Prophets gave their messages, the demons and demon-possessed heeded their words, but lacking understanding, again attempted to gain the power of God by larping out His plan, and failing in essential points.

It's all covered by a number of ancient writers. These guys were around before Odinism was a thing, and countless other nu-Paganisms, but there was already such an explosion of such cults, driven by demons, that they had a huge catalog of examples to choose from.

It's likely the biggest cultic explosion of all time happened as the Israelites were wandering, the whole story is them constantly creating cults and leaving behind settlers etc.

Justin Martyr, 1900 years ago, wrote all this. He was a Greek Israelite and of high breeding and education and wrote two letters to the Roman Emperor which both survive. Very interesting reading. Kinda refutes Paganism itself.

Obviously it wouldn't be justified to attack rival gods, but "demons" who are "tempting" people? Well that's obviously good! And in practical reality such actions were very effective at increasing recruitment while making the enemy terrified to even appear in public, reducing their ability to keep followers.

Early Christian accounts of demons are pretty revealing. I read one from an early saint who, after a year or two of hermitage in the desert, reported a "demon" appearing to him in the form of a sexy young boy (his words) begging to be molested. So either a metaphysical entity appeared to this guy or he was just feeling the effects of being in his 20s and not having jerked off in a few years.

Abrahamic religion is all kinds of confused on the subject, because 'god' is actually an amalgamation of three different Caanite deities who eventually got rolled together into one, so you go from "I'm the best god, worship me the most" to "I'm the best god, and you won't worship anyone but me" to "I'm the ONLY god, everyone else is a faker" and finally "I'm the only god, fullstop".

But the bible, especially the old testament, is a bunch of stories written by different people across thousands of years in different contexts and times, so their perspective on the state of the universe and of god don't actually line up even in the heavily editted versions of the stories we have now, and even these modern versions would be basically unrecognizeable to anyone who lived 2000 years ago.

no, we have preserved copies of the received texts in the original language. we have faithful copies of the Bible. The language itself has been attacked and to read the Bible properly you need an older dictionary like a Webster's 1828 and a Strong's Concordance. The Bible is quite coherent and amazingly consistent but it's not picking up a F. Scott Fitzgerald book. It requires study and discipline. That is what it means to seek God. You work at it.
