It's very real, and physically observable, and even physically measurable. Obesity is one such measure. Proportion of addicts in a population is another. Type can also be considered if you want. The more difficult aspects of decline are unfortunately incommunicable still (despite being easy to describe) and so decline is guaranteed, at accelerating rates.
