A lot of modern anime does look hyperviolent ans hyperealistic for whatever reason. Back in our day (90s) there were some fucked up anime but usually kid friendly stuff was widely available. I look at some of the anime available en mass and see how surreal the content actually is. Impressionable edgy teens are likely to fall head deep into it.
