A psychiatrist can fabricate a diagnosis—claiming a patient has psychotic episodes, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or any other mental health issue—either to have them involuntarily committed so the hospital can collect payments from their health insurance, or to enable the patient to receive government benefits.

Dentists, orthopedists, and ophthalmologists must provide physical evidence that their patients have health issues. Psychiatrists, psychologists, and neurologists, however, do not need to prove anything; they can simply write on a piece of paper that someone has a disorder.
