I have no idea how republicans have some sort of national appeal though, it seems like they should only be popular/needed in very specific local levels. This is why hyper liberal zones like LA, SF, and NY tend to vote conservatively on propositions (even though they vote leftists on candidates), particularly ones involving housing and affordability. SF residents have voted against building affordable housing or implementing more rent controls for decades because the pricepoint functions like a gated community.
