Does being hard on crime with long sentences make society better or worse?

The problem lies not in the length and harshness of most sentences but in the lack of options to deter people from crime in the first place or from reoffending. While there are plenty of criminals who are just complete fuckups and will clearly reoffend again if released there are many more who get let out with the clothes on their back and bus fare in their pocket with a criminal record that makes employment nearly impossible even in a healthy economy and they’re gonna spend six months or a year trying to make an honest go of it before they end up falling into old patterns.If /pol/ believes in rehabilitation, it should support building a better pipeline for dealing with inmates after release and if /pol/ believes once a criminal always a criminal than we should just be imposing the death penalty for every felony and misdemeanor and nip the problem in the bud.
Certainty of being caught deters more than sentence severity. So do you support Flock cameras, or is that too much surveillance?

>>540416046I genuinely and unironically think most punishments for crime do nothing to alter criminal behavior because criminals are usually too stupid to comprehend potential future consequences or make a connection between what they did and the sentence they recieve. Criminality is basically a direct result of failing to pass the breakfast question. Think of the kind of people who rob gas station's and shoot the clerks after they have the money. If you can't understand conditional hypotheticals, you can't be restrained in your behavior by "If I get caught after doing X I'm fucked". And when you do get caught you don't learn anything either because the length between the crime and the sentence means they're unrelated phenomena in your frontal lobe lacking brain. All prison really does is make them not societies immediate problem for a while. The only thing I can think of is bring back lashings as a sentencing option. You'd be able to hand them out faster, and 50 lashes would sure make me think twice about whatever I did
