The TBP originally carried Russian gas north-to-south via Ukraine and Romania into Bulgaria and Turkey. After the end of Russian transit through Ukraine (January 2025) and the rise of TurkStream, that direction largely ceased. It is now being repurposed for reverse (south-to-north) flow as a core part of the Vertical Gas Corridor. This route moves non-Russian gas - LNG from Greek terminals (including US cargoes), Azerbaijani volumes via Turkey, and other sources - through Greece/Bulgaria into Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine. Compressor stations maintain the pressure needed for long-distance transport and enable higher reverse-flow capacity.
